What You'll Do:

The Infrastructure Operations Manager oversees the reliability, security, and performance of the institution’s IT infrastructure in support of academic instruction, research, and administrative operations. This role ensures that critical systems—such as learning management platforms, SIM labs, research computing environments, campus networks, and administrative systems—are highly available and resilient. The manager leads infrastructure operations staff, collaborates with academic and administrative stakeholders, and supports the institution’s mission of teaching, research, and service.


Key Responsibilities

 

Infrastructure & Operations

  • Manage day-to-day operations of on-premises, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure environments supporting academic and administrative systems
  • Ensure high availability and performance of critical services, including LMS platforms, ERP systems, research computing, and identity services
  • Oversee incident, problem, and change management, with special attention to academic calendars and instructional continuity
  • Lead root cause analysis and continuous service improvement initiatives

Campus & Academic Support

  • Partner with academic departments, research units, and central IT teams to support instructional and research technology needs
  • Support high-performance computing, data storage, and research infrastructure as applicable
  • Ensure infrastructure services meet the needs of faculty, staff, students, and visiting researchers

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop infrastructure and operations staff
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, service excellence, and continuous learning
  • Manage on-call coverage and operational support models appropriate for a 24/7 academic environment

Planning, Architecture & Strategy

  • Develop and maintain infrastructure roadmaps aligned with institutional priorities and strategic plans
  • Plan capacity and lifecycle management, accounting for enrollment growth, research demands, and technology refresh cycles
  • Support disaster recovery and business continuity planning for instructional and administrative systems

Security, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure infrastructure operations comply with institutional policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, GLBA, where applicable)
  • Partner with information security teams to manage vulnerability remediation, patching, and access controls
  • Support audits and risk assessments related to infrastructure services

Vendor & Financial Management

  • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and service providers
  • Oversee infrastructure budgets, licensing, and cost optimization initiatives
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that balance innovation, reliability, and fiscal responsibility

Monitoring, Metrics & Communication

  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and performance management tools
  • Track SLAs, KPIs, and service health metrics
  • Communicate system status, risks, and planned changes to campus stakeholders and leadership

What We Need From You:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in IT infrastructure or operations roles
  • 2 years of experience leading or supervising technical teams
  • Strong knowledge of servers, network, storage, virtualization, and operating systems
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP; Azure preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with enterprise systems common in higher education (e.g., ERP, LMS, identity and access management)
  • Knowledge of ITIL or service management frameworks
  • Experience supporting research computing or high-performance computing environments
  • Relevant experience with (e.g., ITIL, AWS/Azure, VMware, Cisco)
